Parliament: To counter Rahul Gandhi, BJP raises Sonia Gandhi’s name in AgustaWestland Scam

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) named Congress President Sonia Gandhi as the driving force behind the 3,600 crore VVIP Helicopter AgustaWestland Scam at parliament on Thursday. However, former Defence Minister AK Anthony refuted the claims and said Gandhi had no role.
Defending Sonia Gandhi, Anthony said that it was indeed Indian Air Force which was the driving force behind the procurement, and not Gandhi. He further added that the BJP has unnecessarily dragged Sonia Gandhi’s name in the scam and will be laughed at for that.
On the other hand, BJP claimed that Anthony had objected to relaxations extended to AgustaWestland regarding field trials. It was further added that these objections were “overridden”. Hence, BJP suggested that it was the Congress chief who was behind this ‘overriding’.
Earlier a report by NDTV dated April 27, 2016 stated that the BJP had decided to name Sonia Gandhi as part of an all-out offensive in Parliament on the AgustaWestland scam. Reportedly, an Italian court investigating the role of officials of defence manufacturer Finmeccanica in bribing politicians and officials in India cited documents which name “Signora Gandhi”.
On Wednesday, Congress Vice-president Rahul Gandhi claimed to have information about personal corruption of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On the same day, a sting operation by India Today TV revealed many members of Congress and other political parties involved in corruption related to money laundering.
