Jayalalithaa dead: 7-day state mourning declared in Tamil Nadu; schools, colleges to shut for 3 days

Chennai: Seven-day state mourning has been declared in Tamil Nadu after the death of J Jayalalithaa on Monday evening. Seven-day state mourning will be observed in Tamil Nadu from December 6 (Tuesday).

The government has also announced three-day holiday for schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu. The announcement came after former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa passed away at Apollo Hospitals after cardiac arrest. She was 68.

O Panneerselvam, who is the most trusted lieutenant of Jayalalithaa within AIADMK, took oath as the next chief minister of Tamil Nadu on early Tuesday. Within hours of Jayalalithaa’s passing away, Panneerselvam was elected AIADMK legislature party leader. He was then sworn in as Chief Minister at Raj Bhavan by Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao. This is the third time Panneerselvam becomes the Chief Minister.
