Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, fondly called by her AIADMK cadre as Amma, died on Monday, local TV report claimed. However, Apollo Hospital and her party AIADMK have denied such claims. Jayalalithaa, who has been undergoing treatment in hospital since September 22, was critical at Apollo Hospital, after suffering a cardiac arrest on Sunday evening.

Following the cardiac arrest, Jayalalithaa was put on a heart assist device.

On November 19, she was taken out of the intensive care unit to a hospital room, but was moved back on Sunday. C Vidyasagar Rao, the acting Tamil Nadu Governor, had on Monday visited the hospital to enquire about her health.

People across the country were seen offering prayers for her speedy recovery on Monday, while a large crowd of her supporters thronged the hospital.
