Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s health condition continues to remain critical. The AIADMK supremo is being constantly monitored by intensivists and cardiologists. According to Apollo Hospital, Jayalalithaa is under extremely critical condition.

In the statement issued earlier in the day, Apollo authorities defined her condition as ‘grave’. AIADMK MLAs have reportedly been asked to sign a declaration to appoint Jayalalithaa’s noted loyalist O Panneerselvam as her successor.

O Panneerselvam is among the leading names of Jayalalithaa’s cabinet who is expected to take over the reins of AIADMK in case of her unfortunate demise. Panneerselvam had been serving as the de facto chief minister of the state since the last week of September, ever since Jayalalithaa’s health condition turned serious.

What we should know about O Panneerselvam, the next potential Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu:

O Panneerselvam, one of the most trusted lieutenant of Amma, served as Chief Minister on two occasions.

His first stint as CM dates back to September 2001 to March 2002. He was appointed the charge as Jayalalithaa was barred from holding the constitutional office by Supreme Court of India.

Panneerselvam was once again appointed as the Chief Minister on September 29, 2014 to May 22, 2015. The decision was taken after Jayalalithaa was convicted in the disproportionate assets case.

Panneerselvam has held the Finance portfolio in all the AIADMK governments. In the current government, he is also holding the portfolio of Public Works Department.

O Panneerselvam has served as the Leader of Opposition during the DMK government between 2006 to 2001.

Panneerselvam is considered to the leader who takes control under situation of crisis. Within AIADMK ranks, he is the second most popular leader after Jayalalithaa.

Panneerselvam S political career dates back to 1996, when he won the Periyakulam municipality.

Panneerselvam was later elected as the legislator from Bodinayakanur assembly seat. He has maintained his grip over the constituency.

Panneerselvam shares a trait with the current Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, as he was too a tea-seller during his early days of life.

Panneerselvam was born in Periyakulam on January 14, 1951. He is currently 65 years old.
