Hyderabad: After districts, it’s now fight for names. Alampur Congress MLA Sampath Kumar who fought for Gadwal district along with MLA D.K. Aruna wants the TS government to name the new Gadwal district after Jogulamba, the presiding deity of famed Alampur temple.

“We will not accept Gadwal as the name of the district. It should be named after Jogulamba. We have represented this to the High Powered Committee,” he said.

Mr Kumar and several other leaders from various districts including the newly carved ones met the High Power Committee and submitted their pleas.

Municipal administration minister K.T. Rama Rao, Peddapalli MP Balka Suman and others discussed formation of new Sircilla district and also its name. They suggested the committee to name it as Rajanna district after the famed Raja Rajeswara Swamy temple at Vemulawada.

Following objections from the MIM and others, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao dropped the proposal to rename Vikarabad as Ananthagiri district. Shamshabad will be named Ranga Reddy district.

Similarly, the CM decided to name the proposed Asifabad district after Komaram Bheem, the tribal leader.

Scores of leaders from Nalgonda, Mahbubnagar, Warangal, Nizamabad and other districts met the High Powered Committee members and thanked them for granting the new districts.

Some of them gave suggestions on mandals and revenue divisions for inclusion and exclusion. MLA Muthireddy Yadagiri Reddy met the committee and discussed the proposed new Jangaon district.

The committee, which is also seeking suggestions and objections on mandals and revenue divisions, received scores of petitions from various districts.

After studying feasibility of proposed Gadwal, Asifabad, Sircilla and Jangaon, the Committee will submit a report to the government on October 7.

“New districts are being carved out as per public demand. We have received 630 petitions. We will go through them and submit our report to the government on October 7. We are also studying request for other districts,” Mr Kesava Rao said.
