Government announces first 20 smart cities; Bhubaneswar, Pune, Jaipur top the list

New Delhi: Union Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday announced the first list of 20 cities to be developed as smart cities, with Bhubaneswar topping the list and Pune and Jaipur coming in at the second and third places respectively.

These cities will be developed to have basic infrastructure through assured water and power supply, sanitation and solid waste management, efficient urban mobility and public transport, IT connectivity, e-governance and citizen participation.

Addressing media, Venkaiah Naidu said, “Today marks a historic landmark in annals of urban development as we get to know the first batch of ‘Smart Cities’. This will demonstrate how integrated planning & smart technologies can deliver better quality of life.”

Further stating that the Smart City plans have been prepared by the Urban Local Bodies and the States, he added, “The results of the competition revealed the unrecognised strength of the federal structure in our country.”

The Smart Cities saw the participation of 1.5 crore citizen in the planning. In the subsequent years, the government will announce 40 cities each to be developed as Smart Cities as per Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s plan to develop 100 Smart Cities in the country.
