New Delhi: In what could escalate the already tense stand-off between BJP and Congress over the Parliament deadlock, the NDA government has decided to do away with stamps dedicated to Congress stalwarts and icons like Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

The move is bound to create fresh political controversy, thereby bringing the two parties at loggerheads over    propagation of legacy of Congress leaders and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ideologues.

According to report in a news website, the Indian icons associated with RSS will figure prominently in the list.   Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee, RSS ideologue and freedom fighter Deen Dayal  Upadhyaya, Maratha icon Chhatrapati Shivaji will now be seen on the postal stamps.

This is clearly a marked departure from the past but is found to raise hackles of the grand old party which is  already on the offensive against NDA government over Lalit gate and Vyapam scam. The move to introduce  new Indian icons came after government decided to bring 22 new personalities on the postal stamps.

Nation’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, musicians Ravi Shankar and Bismillah Khan are also likely to appear on the list.

National heroes like Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, JayPrakash Narayan, Bhagat Singh, Lokmanya Tilak, Swami Vivekananda and Rajendra Prasad will also appear on the stamps for daily use.

The government is also considering a commemorative stamp on legendary Communist leader Bhupesh Gupta on the occasion of his birth centenary year, following a request from the CPI leadership.
