NRIs may soon be allowed to vote without being physically present in constituencies

New Delhi: Close on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to NRIs for greater participation in Indian governance, a landmark change is possibly on anvil for the election process.

The Supreme Court will hear a petition on this issue on November 14, 2014 which has been filed by a Pravasi Bharat organization.

The apex court is expected to take into account a recent report by the Election Commission which recommends that as per existing laws, other than being only physically present to vote, other avenues like E-Ballots and proxy voting can also be explored.

Any ruling by the Supreme Court is likely to impact our democratic process and will make big news.
